The Hero’s Way: Walking with Garibaldi from Rome to Ravenna

On July 2, 1849, Giuseppe Garibaldi had to make a difficult decision. The ephemeral experience of the Roman Republic comes to an end; it is impossible to resist the siege of the French army led by General Oudinot, sent to restore papal authority over the Eternal City. The Republicans fought bravely, but the time has come to accept the reality: they must leave Rome in the hands of the enemy. Garibaldi, however, does not intend to give up. He is ready to go at the head of a corps of volunteers to continue the struggle for the unification of Italy elsewhere; that morning he uttered fiery words, asking his men to follow him once more. He expects ten thousand, but to answer the call are only four thousand foot soldiers and eight hundred soldiers on horseback. And they have a single cannon with them. Thus, in the middle of the night, flanked by his six-month pregnant wife Anita, the hero of two worlds who married the ideals of the Risorgimento takes the lead of a sad and silent column and embarks on a journey that will lead them to climb the Apennines. A march in stages.
